Hagane no Renkinjutsushi...
This Anime is reaching a rather high level of fandom. Even with the inevitably feeble dub, its popularity skyrockets. Plus, the newly released Movie will only help. I eagerly await the release of the FMA movie on DVD...
Thank you for making this thread! Has anyone here seen the movie yet?

Unfortunately it is only in theatres in Japan, so not many people living outside of Japan will have seen it. Unless they download some terrible quality version. I am waiting for the Japanese DVD release.

Yeah. When are there going to be new episodes? I've seen all the episodes on [adult swim] TWICE! They always backtrack to the first episode as soon as they get to one part where Ed cheated a game of arm wrestling with two alchemists that used alchemy to cheat and win money. As soon as these two other ppl (a woman with black hair that they're talking about is a creation of Ed and Al's mother gone wrong or something like that) I don't know, but it's getting me p.o.ed! D :< Someone please tell me why they're doing re-runs OVER AND OVER AGAIN!?

Ive been searching Day and Night for the torrents. And seeing as how it just came out a month ago, I am sure that someone will have it up on a Torrent sooner or later. But waiting for the DVD will take a long time. Now that I think about it, I don't even think the Naruto Movie is out on DVD and it came out over a year ago I believe. And judging on the popularity of the anime they would have no good reason to rush the Movie. Because I'm almost positive that everyone will be a believer after the second half of the episodes that they will be begging to see the movie.... Ahaha. And plus they would need to get out the rest of the episodes on DVD. So I don't think the movie will be out for awhile. But then and again. I could be wrong.
Potential spoiler.

That woman with black hair..? Um. Thats Ed and Al's sensei. Miss Izumi Curtis and her Husband. You might be thinking of Sloth, though.

Ive been searching Day and Night for the torrents. And seeing as how it just came out a month ago, I am sure that someone will have it up on a Torrent sooner or later.you probably won't find the torrents, all the torrents were out last year, and since it is licensed in American now, the torrent sites had to get rid of all the torrents of what the U.S. has shown....
It was a very good series, although i didn't think the ending was as good as it could have been, but it was still good....i just really don't want to ruin the ending for anyone so i will wait until Adult Swim shows all the episodes, which will probably be in september or october.....and i can't wait until i see the movie, only another two months or so(i'm guessing...).....
The reason that Adult Swim is airing the re-runs is because they are waiting for the rest of the episodes to be dubbed so they can show the rest of the series in one shot....

I assumed he meant Torrents for the Hagaren movie. Or FMA movie, whatever you want to call it. Anyway it is highly unlikely that you will find any torrents of decent quality for a while. If you do find one it will prabably be a "cammed" version. And those are crap.

one thing's for sure, Adlut swim IS going to need to show all the episodes in order to show the movie, or people won't get it. Yes, the ending to the series was no good, but I hope the movie's better. all I know is that Ed mets a boy who looks just like Al, but the boy hates it when Ed treats him like a baby brother. (and I want to see why the hell Envy turned into a dragon looking thing the last time you see him on the series.)
oh and uh......Long live FMA. o.o;

And as I said before... The ending served its purpose which is to set up for the movie.
Well... On the last episode Envy turned into a Dragon while crossing the gate. To find Professor Elric.
That Kid who looks like Alphonse is actually Alphonse's self on the other side of the gate. Just like how a kid looked like Ed on the other side of the gate in Episode 48/49.
Okay, I heard this from a friend of mine who happens to like FullMetal Alchemist almost as much as I do, except I think that he's seen all of the episodes. But, I'm confused about the last couple of episodes. He told me that Edward goes through this portal thing.. or something like that and his whole body turns back to normal. And.. the other world through the portal, is like our world.. o__O;.. I.. don't really get it. If someone could clear this up for me, It would REALLY help. Ooh, and is Adult Swim showing new episodes of FMA yet? :/ They really should.. I haven't seen past the episode " Teacher " when Izzumi (sp?) visits Edward,Al and Winry after Edward wins that one contest at that place with all the automail.. actually, I've never even seen that teacher one.. Adult Swim cut it off.. >>; Damn them. Anyway, If you have anyway of reaching me.. Email me.. PM me.. or just simply post on here, that would REALLY help. ^^;

The movie's out in japan? Wow, any word as to when it will be released in any way in the US?
I thought FMA was one of the best anime I have ever seen - behind only Miyazaki or Takahata's work (and then only sometimes) in scope and beauty. I especially liked the idea that everything is connected - and the idea of equivalent exchange kept it more "real"...

Sometimes I wish I was nihonjin just so I can see all the cool shows before they get tampered by the US. Neway, I've only read the first two mangas of the anime, but I think it's really cool too. Sad what happens to that girl who got fused with a dog in vol2 though.

I thought the ending was very good - how do you expect them to end it? If you end a series that makes you think alot by making everything obvious and resolved at the end, it's a horrible ending! this way, there's both the knowledge of more to come, a passable conclusion to the original enemies, explanations of a lot of things, and still a bunch of questions to be asked and resolved. What more can you ask for?

As you people know. [Adult Swim] is showing Episodes 27-51 on Saturdays at 11:30pm. I just have to say that episode 27-30 has been awesome. It always leaves me wanting to see the next episode. The series is only on episode 31 (which shows this Saturday) and I find out more each episode. I used to just like Full Metal Alchemist but now i'm addicted to it. Like I said months ago. 27-51 is way better than 1-27.... So if you liked the Anime after watching the first 27 Episodes then the next 24 will be epic. The first set of episodes featured on the basis of the Elric brothers story. The second half will be baised on the creation/death of Homunculi and the truth behind the phillsophers stone and Alchemys laws.. BTW: Make sure to watch these next few Episodes...

Come on people this is so weird. Don't get me wrong B/C I LOVE FULL METAL its just at Ed's age his not thanking about girls more than how tall he is. They could add something more to the show. I have a little question.. Since this is a discussion thread..
In episode 10, when Ed and Psiren are fighting in the river. She knocked Ed into the river and he SWAM back to the surface..
In Episode 28 on Yokk Island. Al and Ed are talking about escaping from the island.
Ed: "Al.. Lets escape."
Al: "No we can't! I can't even swim!"
Ed: "Come to think of it.. Neither can I."
(( I think that's how it went.))
What I don't get is How Ed swam in Episode 10 and then said that he couldn't swim in episode 28.
Can anyone explain that? @__@;; It's so confusing.

Well... Ironically enough, in episode 10 he didn't swim back up to the surface. He started swimming but then he started to drop a little and then it cut out to him being on the surface. So I don't think that was conclusive evidence of him swimming. And plus he was coughing a lot, which could also support the fact that he was drowing, but that isnt conclusive either.

Episode 28 was a flashback. I think you are refering to when they were left on the island and told to survive. If so, then technically the stuff that happened in episode 28 was actually BEFORE episode 10. Plenty of time for Ed to learn how to swim.

Um... He mighta learned how to swi. , but simply... It would be impossible seeing as how he has an AUTO-MAIL arm and leg... Unless the automail was hollow, which we all know its not. And we all know what happens when you put metal in water, it sinks and eventiually rusts.... So yeah, odd but I hoipe there is some sense to it.

I agree, Kloud Seven. What really got to me in the second half of the series was the awesome character development. There weren't many characters left that you didn't feel at least a little something for. Well, not Kimbly or Archer, but the rest were really fleshed out. Especially Scar and Lust. I even felt a little bad for poor Gluttony at the end, and Envy, well I'm waiting to see since I hear he's in the movie.

Surprisingly, one of the characters I liked least was Wrath. I found him to be just annoying. But Izumi(?) I loved, especially when she was kicking around Ed and Al.
Also, the fact that romance between characters was on vaguely (if that) hinted at in this show was a plus for me. Nothing like a googly-eyed girl to ruin the underlying story. Instead, the relationship of the two brothers was played up, and I really found myself sympathizing with Ed a lot. He may be annoying, but his life's motivation is to "fix" Al. Maybe because I'm the older sister....

I'll get around to reading the manga eventually, especially since the ending will be different. I don't want a lot of fluffy. I'm afraid it will take away from the sadness and bleakness of the story. Does anyone else feel badly for Envy? Just a little, I mean? Not going to spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen it, but I figured out who he was before it was revealed. Not that I enjoyed any of the things he did in the anime. Each of the homunculi had a story that added to the many layers of the story.

I kinda feel bad for him. But on the other hand I don't. Because Dante doesn't control him. So hes causing chaos for his pure enjoyment.

Oh, I definitely save the most of my empathy for the characters who deserve it. I just think how much it would suck to spend all that time feeling abandoned. He had a long time to build up all that hatred. He's insane.
I wish Greed had played a bigger role. And I know this is so typical, but the character I identified with the most was Ed.

I totally agree that Greed shoulda' played a bigger role. But then and again, I think Greed's death set up the depths of Dante's own greed.

But on the flip side of the coin, Edward is really a genious in the way he killed Greed. Rearranging the carbon in his body to expose his heart. Thats awesome.

The whole show is about sacrifice. That's what really got to me. Every (human) character is sufferring from past mistakes and trying to make things right in his/her own way. I think there's got to be at least one character in the show for each person to relate to. It's so universal.

FMA is up to 51 epsiode, right? I didn't get to watch the whole series, but I know how the story goes. It's about Alchemy described in the anime as an art of destroying & rebuilding a certain thing. Main cast Ed w/ his brother Al is on a mission of searching the philospher stone w/c increases the effectivity of transmutation(It's how I interpreted the series after watching the first 10 episodes)
Unfortunately, I wasn't able to watch the suceeding episodes. Just recently, while searching for videos in one of my fave sites, I found & watched the ending episode of the series. I thought the ending was okay. It has lots of intellect as a whole.^_^

Yeah, but Ed is still a kid....
The whole show is about sacrifice. That's what really got to me. Every (human) character is sufferring from past mistakes and trying to make things right in his/her own way. I think there's got to be at least one character in the show for each person to relate to. It's so universal.
Sacrifice is a huge theme of the series. Just look at the ending of the series itself. It involves sacrifice in order to make others happy and so they may continue living, as how Ed sacrificed himself for Al. It was as though the level of each sacrifice built up throughout the series, leading up to the ultimate sacrifice, that being death.
As much as I hated the ending(I have not yet seen the movie, as I am too preoccupied with other, better series), this theme is kind of what held it together for me.
FMA is up to 51 epsiode, right? It ends at 51 episodes. It ended in late 2004 in Japan, and will be over in another two months or so in America.

Volume 7 of Fullmetal Alchemist has been released last month. in the advertisement in Anime insider February 2006 Edition, it shows Ed with his arm completely disassembled/destroyed and text reading: "The universe follows a greater law that is beyond our imagination. To understand, disassemble, and reconstruct under this law... That, is Alchemy." I really don't have the time to watch adult swim so I get the DVDs and watch them then.
it has aired on adult swim for quite some time, so I naturally go dive into a sea of DVDs to get these volumes... well that's it.

1: Does the circle have to be touching the transmutated object, or on the object directly?

1: Does the circle have to be touching the transmutated object, or on the object directly?
2: Someone explain to me how Ed and Wrath don't need a circle.
1. I believe it has to be directly on the object. It does not necessarily have to be in the place you want to transmute, but it has to be on it somewhere. For instance, if transmuting a wall, you could want to transmute a spot 10 feet away, and do it from where you are standing.
2. Ed does not need a transmutation circle because of his auto-mail arm, which has I transmutation circle on it (If i remember correctly). Wrath is the product of alchemy, and therefore is alchemy. He is able to use Ed's arm in order to preform alchemy, combining himself with other materials. (If I remember correcly).

I thought it was because he gained all that knowledge from when we saw the Door of Equivalent Exchange... thats why Ed's teacher and father can do it too. Wrath can do Alchemy because he has Ed's limbs. If you notice, none of the other Homonculus's can do Alchemy.
Also, who saw last night's episode?

The movie will probably be translated, dubbed, and aired in the U.S. by the middle or end of summer.

That totally got me! I thought Ed's ultimate sacrifice would be death to save Al, but in the end, it was THAT. Of course that left the opening for the movie to take place, but come on! i mean this sat. episode....whats with the whole london thing....its scaring me Oh that....well, that is the reason why the large majority of FMA fans hate the ending. The following paragraph will be a spoiler.
Basically, when people in the Alchemist-world (the world where FMA takes place, for the most part) get pulled into The Gate, they go to London, where they cannot do transmutations or preform alchemy, and where alchemy is not even known of. The fact that there are Zepplins bombing London, is a clear indication that it is London during WW2. Likewise, when people in the London-world(our world) die, they become the energy(that blue lightening) that is needed to preform alchemy....or something like that. It has been about a year since I watched it, so I'm forgetting all the details.

This is a show I'm always at ends with, I love the excellent animation, the action is well done and the characters are pretty interesting. But there is so much filler in the show it isn't even funny, there is just no reason in the world to have 51 episodes if you're going to miss use them like that. I wish this FMA would have been cut in half episode wise so they actually made the most out of the 22 minute running time.

I disagree. The show contained many characters and each one was fully developed along with his or her personality quirks, motivations, and back story. To cut the show in half would water down the depth of the characters and the story and who wants that? Though, I do agree some of the standalone eps in the beginning were tedious and monotonous.

Some how I fail to see how removing the insane amount of usless dialog that adds nothing to the show would water it down. Not to mention they criminally overuse the dramatic pause. That's what eats up time not any real character development, which is pretty minimal anyway. Many of the characters (anyone from the military) don't change at all. I like the show, but it's B material.

In my own personal opinion I think it makes my tops because of its theme.
But its all just opinion anyways.
I think 51 episodes wasn't a bad number... I would maybe say around 40- 45 because there were some redundant episodes... But I think they need some of those episodes for people who start watching around the half point mark so they're not COMPLETELY in the dark.

At any rate, it's certainly not my favorite anime, but it is a good one to watch, especially starting just before the mid-point. And certainly the near cult following of this show has lead to over-analysis and over-saturation. There are other better and more obscure shows out there, but something about FMA continues to sink its hooks into viewers or there would be no need for this thread.

I didn't like the ending too well. It left way too many questions like "Does Al ever find Ed?" "What happened to Glutonny and Dante?" "WHy did Envy turn into a dragon?" "Where the heck is Wrath?" Like I said, too many questions.

Like I said, too many questions. There is a movie which answers some of the questions. It has already been mentioned numerous times in this thread...although I did not like the movie and felt it did the ending no justice.

In response to your question "Where the heck is Wrath?"--Didn't you watch the last ep? Watch the movie, but you probably won't be happy then, either.

this could very well be one of my favourite shows turned into one of my disliked shows because of an ending that i really think could have been thought much better. Good but nothing amazing. Still, it's one of the better series that wasn't COMPLETELY massacred through english dubbing. Japanese was still better.
Gjallarhorn
03-29-2006, 09:31 PM
I must disagree. I actually prefered the English dub better than the Japanese. Back in the days when it was airing in Japan, because of the western names and such, I felt that it would have been better in english. The quality of the english dub was great, and the voice actors certainly knew what they were doing. It was an impressive dub, up there in the ranks of Cowboy Bebop.

Um... The ending sets up the movie. It's just another ploy to draw out money.
On another note, I thought the Dub was good. And seeing as how it aired on AS they didn't take out much. TO my liking, they really didn't take out anything. Now I just wanna see how good the movie is for the English Dub. And then I can rest. The Japanese movie was pretty good and the music was kool. Alphonse in his human body is awesome.
some characters will be dying or dead in the movie.

i much agree seeing al in his human form was awsome...the bad part is though that he freiken lost his memories, and he has no recollection of all the crap him and his brother went through to get there. another thing about the ending that was wrong is that Ed gets his damn arm back and then crosses the gate ultimately loseing his arm again (p.s. wth is ed useing for Englans auto mail?!) anyway!! hmm....and eds father becomes a real world alchemic teacher? what is this....its like there combinening Two worlds into one....the ending like 10+ people mentioned left a Huge gap and i also cant wait for FMA the movie in English Dubs that'll be the day i can finally R.I.P o_o;; wait that didnt sound right....anyway...They revealed alot of people crossed the gate includeing one that i hated VEDDY VEDDY MUCH!! >_>;; anyway ill keep in touch with this posting

Ever since the series ended, I decided to not stay up and waste my sleeping hours to watch Stroker & Hoop (Sorry, but that show annoys me..) Anyway, my friend (same one that told me Ed was stabbed) said that [adult_swim] has started the series over again. This will be a good chance for those who have missed a lot of episodes and didn't understand a diddlysquat of the last episode. If you all know and stayed faithful believers in FMA and decided to stay up and wait for it to come on, then just ignore my post. c_c;

I thought Full Metal Alchemist was really good, I thought the ending wasn't too bad, it left some questions yes, but overall the series was really good, the way the series progressed and the characters developed and how some people may have thought of Scar as nothing more than an evil jerk, it turned out that there was a heck of a lot more to him than originally thought.

Not true. Once you get past the half-way point, a lot of characters become regulars besides the ones you listed. Winry and the bookworm chick (can never remember her name....) and all of Mustang's underlings like Fury and Havoc. Their parts aren't as big as Ed's and Al's, but a lot of characters get facetime in many episodes.

In the Manga, Ed acts like an evil little brat so it's really quite funny. You always see Al thinking something like "Oh no, he's going to do something evil isn't he?" So that is always funny. And when Ed turns the lead to gold once he says to Al. I'm going to break the law, but i'll just pretend your not here. So, it's just that Ed acts differently. If you want, you can see upto volume 8 here http://www.fullmetal-alchemist.com/manga.php

Thanks a bunch Fullmetal, even after I finish a series I enjoy reading the manga to decide whichever I prefer whenever possible. And yeah, that ending was a bit abrupt for my liking but effective nonetheless. What's up with the whole Dante thing? Did Gluttony get her or what? Ed~ Don't look away, Rose. You need to see what happens when you cross the line. When you cross into gods territory or whatever the hell it is. Is this what you want?!! Look!!
Mustang~ Dog huh? I LOVE DOGS!! They obey their masters without question. You can treat them badly and they won't complain. And best of all......... They don't ask for a paycheck.
Greed~ Hey, I've got a hostage here. Is everyone forgetting about that?? Why won't anybody listen to me? Hellllllooooo?!

It makes them all look like fat chibi's to me
But yea, I can't wait for the movie!! I wanna know what happens to Ed!! Oh, and poor Al, just imagine one second all you see is your brother holding his hand out to you and then when you wake up again, your brother is missing, your bestfriend *who used to be your same age* is years older than you and not to mention everyone but you now knows what was up with your dad....yea that would suck.

So you're saying that it's imperfections are what make you like it?

Hagane no Renkinjutsushi...
This Anime is reaching a rather high level of fandom. Even with the inevitably feeble dub, its popularity skyrockets. Plus, the newly released Movie will only help. I eagerly await the release of the FMA movie on DVD...so be sure to get it

Number one: The anime already had a high level of fandom. How do you think this thread got so big?
Number two: The show was practically written to be in English. What with the non-Japanese names such as Mustang, Al, Winry, Bradely, ect. I have not seen the sub yet, but I do believe the dub to be more pleasureable to the ears
