Well I just picked up the first DVD of this show and I can honestly say I think I'm already hooked.
This series looks like it is going to be a wonderful combination of dark supernatural elements mixed with humor and just a touch of romance between the characters that all animes of this sort need to help give a little more gravity to the character's lives.
The Setting is the late 1920's in America, the two main characters, a fiery young lady name Rosette who is a member of the Order of Magdalene, a religious order constructed from varying faiths to hunt down and destroy demons and other various creatures of evil. Along side her is her companion Chrono, who is a fallen devil. The two share a deep bond that I feel will be explained as the series progresses, but in the beginning we know that Rosette is Chrono's Contractor. Basically her soul is bound to Chrono and if he is to ever achieve his true form in battle he must draw from her soul energy to do so, this is of course at the expense of her life, the longer he retains his true form, the less years Rosette has to live. So you can understand that Chrono is always very hesitant to draw upon that power.
The voice cast so far has been chosen quite well. For those of you who are familiar with Bubble gum Chris's Tokyo 2040 you will recognize the voices of Maki, Sylvia, and Nene right off the bat. I have a feeling even more of that crew will begin to pop up as the show progresses.
I really like the attention to detail as far the time period is concerned. During this fun/ serious romp through the supernatural you will hear such old phrases as "oh applesauce" and "Just Ducky" along with many other phrases I had not heard since watching a lot of the old movies that my Mother collected. This small detail seems to just add so much to the story for some reason.. as the Voice director put it, it added that extra flavor that makes everything just come together.
I'm really looking forward to seeing what is in store for Rosette and Chrono, as well as for me as I continue to collect the DVD's as they come out. If anyone has not checked this out and wants to take a chance on a really well done anime, pick this one up. If there's any interest I'd be more than happy to keep a sort of update on the series as I pick them up. If not, well I'll just speak up from time to time about how the series is going, if its getting better, worse, so forth and so on.
But that's my two cents on Chrono Crusade, I highly recommend it.
David.
