Keep watching. I personally prefer the manga but the series gets really good as well. Its really funny, and it pretty much inspired the whole harem anime genre. Without maison ikkoku, we most likely wouldnt have most of the romance harem anime we do today. (Takahashi is godly)

Here here on Takahashi. I have mangas 1-6 I don't plan on getting the anime, but M.I. is funny and cool and I hear it ends really well. :)

Maison Ikkoku was my first manga. Last year I read the last books of Maison Ikkoku, and I loved the bit where Kyoko said "Promise me, that even if it is by just one day, you will out live me, because I don't think I can endure being left alone again". It almost brought a tear to my eye. Someday, I'm going to get the final Maison Ikkoku movie which has the ending of the series.

The manga is great, but I haven't seen the anime, so I can't say which is better. I think the manga has been completely translated by Viz, but the anime hasn't been fully dubbed yet, but you can find fan subs I think. Well, I started downloading the Maison Ikkoku final movie, but the torrent is gone now.
If you're into romantic comedies, then you should try Maison Ikkoku.
