A movie about cheerful two sisters Elsa and Anna who grew up doing everything together, Elsa the eldest has magical ice powers. However one playful day something went wrong with Elsa's magic that put the youngest sister Anna whom she loves in danger. Frantic the king and queen search to find a cure for her. However this also forces Elsa to try and control her powers and learns that fear can consume her. Apparently her parents forgot that part since all they did was pressure her into concealing it and not feeling it which scared her. So after the unexpected death of the king and queen Elsa becomes queen, something happens and she freezes the entire kingdom and runs away. (basic summary in case for some reason you saw the movie and forgot. Or at least you SHOULDVE seen the movie, the title says there's spoilers)

My thoughts: So I'm a fan of all things Disney and gosh did I live this movie. I loved all the characters and felt connected to them. Ehem except one. Everyone was so modern and relatable unlike most "disney princess movies" Anna was so cute and goofy. The sister's parents though. They handled Elsa wrong IMO. They were the biggest part of the problem. Olaf was my comedic relief ever though. I'm really quite glad Disney is shining away from talking animal sidekicks though. That was always a bit weird. the reindeer doesn't talk, but talks through Kristoff, which works for me as it displays their relationship. THAT PLOT TWIST THOUGH. I never saw it coming. NEVER.SAW.IT.Ending was great though. Loved the ending and how it strayed away from the typical.

Animation was really great. Hyper detailed snow! Example:

I loved the movie. Ive been really happy lately with the new disney princess movies and I sincerely hope they do more like this. Loved the villian too and how underplayed it was, but I caught on pretty quick who it was

Man.... Get that Elsa x Anna bulls--t outta here. Bad enough that people keep shipping them, but the fact that it's INCEST makes it even worse.
Anna x Kristoff ftw.

Back on topic: The movie delivered. I had the same pleasant feels I had when I watched Tangled.

I love Frozen. <3 I actually had it as my avatar and siggy for a while, Elsa specifically. My friend and I started a Facebook page for it too, specifically for Anna because almost ALL of the Frozen stuff we ever see online is about Elsa and he asked if I would help him with it to try and get more Anna stuff.

Anyways, I thought it was fantastic! It really was the first Disney animated movie in a long time to really have that classic Disney magic feel to it. :) And the story was just amazing. I'm also a big fan of Idina Menzel, though I didn't know she was in it until I went to see it. It was definitely a pleasant surprise!

Also might I add that I find it hilarious that the friend I happened to go see it with IS Anna. Seriously. Even the Scandinavian ancestry. The only place they differ is that, when they first met Olaf, she would have been the one to be like, "I'm gonna tell him." xD

It is kind of funny how Elsa has become such a fan favorite, much like Loki from the Thor and Avengers franschises. Even villians get love.

Well Elsa isn't a villain? She doesn't hurt anyone, at least not on purpose. Everything she has done was out of fear of herself and her powers. The fear that her parents had pushed on her. In "let it go" you got the sense she was less afraid and that's when you felt she truly had the most control over her powers because she wasn't afraid of them. Although she almost hurt the people who were out to get her, rightfully so. She was cornered, scared, and these people wanted to kill her. She didn't kill/hurt them though.

She was intended to be a villain yes, but Disney re-wrote it once they heard "let it go"

Right, a non-killing villain. Doesn't she make the entire land wintery with snow and frost and cold too?

Not intentionally. She didn't even know that everything was frozen until her sister Anna went after her and mentioned it.. She thought it was just frozen up in the mountains where she was.

No, I agree, for the most part it was subpar. Only 1... maybe 1 and 1/2 good songs, a predictable plot, and so on.

The only decent part was the lesbian subplot

You know, there is no lesbian subplot. The only ones making it out that there is are dumbasses that have no context of what a lesbian is or have no clue as to what sisterly love is.

Sisters that love each other? OMG, YOU GAIZ, LESBIAAAAAAAAANS

Nevermind that Anna fell for Hanz and later Christoff, SHES TOTES LEZZY YOU GAIZ. FOR CEREAL.

Could Elsa be gay? Sure, why not. I dont care. But for you two to suggest that theres lezzy incest going on....smh. You really think Disney would have an incest subplot? Both of you must some serious issues with grasping things then. Or have brain damage. Either or

Disney already has a series with a same sex couple. There is A B S O L U T E L Y nothing wrong with it either. Most of the people who work for Disney is LGBT, even so that quite a bit of my co-workers at disney were, and if you weren't everyone was nice enough to support their fellow co-workers. Disney also allows Gay Days event within their parks every year when a outside group of LGBT people come to the park on a certain weekend and have some family fun. While Disney does not sponsor this event, they do silently place rainbow themed merch in more obvious places in stores during this particular weekend...

As for the sibling thing there are 2 male Lions in The Lion King. Now look at Nala. Do the math.

I love this movie because it focuses more on family ties than romance, which is nice. Let It Go is also a nice song, I have to say I like Demi Lovato's version more than Idina Menzel's. And Olaf is my favourite character.

If you got a "lesbian vibe" from watching a movie about two sisters, there is something wrong with you. I would feel awkward too if I started having weird lesbian-incest feelings coming out of nowhere.:rolleyes:

It is interesting that, in this heteronormative society, people are sick of a woman being rescued by some man in the end and getting married after knowing him for 3 hours. However, after getting a movie that doesn't have a princess getting saved by a random man (Anna saves herself) and not only has a princess that doesn't fall in love but disparages the very notion of getting married to some random dude, people turn around and scream "EWW LESBIANS!!"

There are some special type of people in this world, I swear.

What math? And there were more than 2 males lions in The Lion King. There were 3 lionesses too. 3 lions (Father, Son, and Uncle) and 3 Lionesses (Mother of a son, Mother of a daughter, and a Daughter). 3 + 3 =/= Lesbians.

Two things:

The lesbian thing was about Mulan, not The Lion King. In Once a Upon Time, it was (essentially) revealed that Mulan was bisexual since she was chasing Prince Philip around the whole time, but she almost revealed to Aurora that she was in love with her. People almost lost their minds.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a5od0hNYlwk

Also, in The Lion King, since there are only two adult male lions (Mufasa and Scar), there are only two possibilities: that Mufasa mated with all of the females, making Simba and Nala half-siblings, or Scar got to mate with some of the females, which potentially makes Nala and Simba cousins (there is no possibility that they are not related, given typical lion behavior).

So Simba and Nala are either paternal cousins or they are brother and sister. To make things worse, there was once a plot about Scar trying to seduce Nala (something that is still present in the Broadway play). So he is either trying to mate with his niece or...his own daughter.

That is some Game of Pride Rock mess right there.

Clayton_n, Seriously dude. Not every interaction between two girls, two women, or a woman and a girl is lesbian stuff. Get your head out of the lesbian genre of porn, and you'll see that love doesn't always come from a lover and at many times bonds between family are stronger than anything else.

It makes me wonder though..

Obviously because Anna and Elsa are sisters, and because like Maru said, Disney will never endorse the act of incest then it renders all those comments stupid, even just vibes.

But ignoring any contradictions, what if they were friends? Would it render the assumptions more valid thus it being more controversial?

Personally, due to the "anit-cliche" route that this movie took, I still wouldn't think they are lesbians/gay/bi because you can still truly love your friends (as well as do what Anna did for Elsa) but due to the same scenario mentioned, I wouldn't exactly blame people who had those vibes. Because it's been said, there's nothing wrong with (les/bi) it and it's been done before with other Disney media. However, there's nothing else to go off from so...it's baseless assumptions so second reason why I would think they are not les/bi.

Clayton_n, Seriously dude. Not every interaction between two girls, two women, or a woman and a girl is lesbian stuff. Get your head out of the lesbian genre of porn, and you'll see that love doesn't always come from a lover and at many times bonds between family are stronger than anything else.

Uh, actually thte three sistyers thing in both Alladin and Beauty and the Beast involved all three sisters and one guy... which means all three sisters and that counts.

And I don't feel that way about MY family, but thanks to the Gilmore Girls...

Was a pretty refreshing ending, wasn't it? Something besides Handsome Hero(s) saving the day.

It would have been refreshing twenty years ago.

The animated disney pricess lineup Frozen is following is Brave, Tangled, The Princess and the Frog, Mulan, and Pocohantas. The prince charming thing is extremely dated (except when he's the bad guy). Kristoff was probably a bit above par in terms of relative competance and such out of the bunch.

The sister angle was new though, and having a pair of little girls I quite appreciated it. I found the film quite enjoyable as movie night fair goes, and the girls loved it.

It occurs to me that the X-men could be used to wrap up a good 90% of the movies out there (including more than a few Romcoms I've sat through with my wife). But I did enjoy that.

It's not the whole lesbian garbage being spout by people...its actually interesting.

I dunno about his stuff.

First he's again thinking of Disney tropes set starting in the 30s.

For more recent guys my take is something like this:

Brave: A parade of nameless losers. I don't know if I'd even say they have a male lead.
Tangled: I guess Flynn has some skillz and some game despite getting slapped around by Rapunzel
The Pincess and the Frog: That insufferable bum was lucky he was the last human-turned-into-a-frog on earth so he could marry into what came to be a successful restaurant instead of ending on food stamps.
Mulan: Ok, prince whats-his-face has some credentials. But he was completely overshadowed and, now that I think about it, wasn't he actually a jerk to her once he found out her secret? And she actually didn't want to be in the castle around him. He had to come after her, at which point her family latched onto his prestige and wealth. Looking back things were a bit more awkward than lovebirdish with them right?
Pocohontas: Smith displayed some heroism, but she had to save him. And then turned his butt down.

In short I think the disney princess movie stereotype needs to be redefined.

As for the gay thing, I think he's over interpreting things. The whole "I gotta be me" thing has been a strong concept since at least the 60s, probably long long before that, and has broad appeal for a lot of people for a lot of a reasons. If you wanted to pin it down to a specific lifestyle choice it seems you would be able to make the strongest case for it supporting the otherkin community. Though the "I gotta be me" concept is supportive to the LGBTQIAUO cause and so I guess there is that

Am I the only one picturing her parents planning to tell Elsa that love was the key as soon as they got back from their brief and uneventful sea voyage?

Just wondering though, in the Disney princess movies if you replace the princes with another princess... would that even effect the story? (Note: Mulan was never an actual princess)

I'm pretty sure if they had that idea they'd have mentioned it earlier.

Also I'm not entirely sure love is completely the answer. If she still starts hurling icy death bolts and whatnot when she gets POed than having somebody that loves you isn't going to totally resolves the issue.

(Note: Mulan was never an actual princess)

Actually she is. They made sequels. Though for some reason I think the sequels are always half baked direct to video deals. So far my girls don't know about them.

Since Elsa has superpowers throwing her into any of the other stories would change them dramatically, and possibly end them in about five minutes.

Otherwise I might broadly define the Princesses as being Traditional (Snow White, Cinderella, Aurora, Ariel), modern (Pocohontas on), and maybe transitional (Belle, Jasmin).

The Traditional princesses were noteworthy for their physical attractiveness, singing, and a certain type of mentality.

Modern princesses are, well I probably don't need to explain that. The transitional ones are a blend of the types.

So I think if you switch a traditional and modern princess you'd change things up.

As far as my daughters go they generally gravitated more towards the "traditional" princess movies as those movies spend a lot of time with people singing songs with birds and crap as opposed to fighting. But they did like Frozen. Though they're probably just getting older. In the past they probably would have gotten freaked out by all the violence.

Actually, shes not. Li Shang is a Captain of the army, he has no relations to the king. Disney added her to the princess lineup because she was popular. You could argue Pocahontas and Merida arent either, but their fathers are...chiefs, of sorts. So it kinda makes them princesses. Alice almost became a princess, but her 'testing phase' before adding her didnt go well, so she was never added to the Disney princess lineup.

Elsa joining the princess lineup is interesting, since in her movie shes a queen.

Actually I wouldn't mind a "Disney Princess" with a "screw royalty" attitude. Though that might be biting the hand that feeds them.

Actually, in one of the sequels, I believe the emperor sends Shang and Mulan to transport his three daughters off to marry another prince or something, but they fall for Mulan's three little army buddys [I cant remember their names for the life of me]. So there are princesses in a sequel...and I guess the 3 army guys marry them to become princes? Dont quote me on that, I dont remember how it ends.

Yes and yes. Kida was the princess and her testing phase bombed. Its the same as Eilonwy from the Black Cauldron. Shes a princess and yet shes not in the lineup because the movie did poorly. I suppose that hints other pincess like movies that don't get in aren't considered as good. I suppose The Hunchback of Notre Dame, when considered against the others, had the rather depressing message of "love can overcome anything...except being ugly."

Actual answer? I bet they came up with the climax first, then probably some of the early stuff, and, as is often the case, things get a little sketchy as they try and connect the dots. Also logical inconsistency makes people more likely to fall for twist endings.

Buuut since I kinda enjoy the mental exercise of rationalizing/explaining stuff I'll take a shot. At that point in time he wasn't actually married to Anna yet so his succession was far from certain, and may have been looking to curry favor with her sister with the whole "don't be the monster they think you are" business. He probably figured he could kill her at his leisure later the wedding.

His hand was later forced because he knew he couldn't deliver a "true love" kiss. Revealing his evil scheme after that and leaving her unguarded to "die" are just tropes you have to roll with

Because that was apart of his plan. But how easy is it going to be for Anna to kill her only sister. Even short-stuff didn't think Anna could do anything, so he sent his goons after Elsa. When Elsa gets thrown into jail, it's for appearance sake. Give the illusion that she will be given a fair trail and/or punishment. That way he looks like a true prince of honor rather than scum trying to wear valor. It helps when you think about Game of Thrones when trying to understand Hans's moves.

Yeah, I was going to use spoiler tags until I realized that the title of the thread mentions spoilers, so...

The reason why Hans didn't let those two guys kill Elsa was because he knew that he at least needed to get back on Elsa's good graces in order for his plan to work; his lies can only go so far. His intention was to make Elsa look like a monster, then kill her and become a hero. However, if those Weslton guys killed Elsa, then he isn't a hero.

Also, Elsa was highly provoked at that point and those two were about to be killed. Hans didn't want to take a chance with that, so he pretended to be merciful to let her guard down. He deflected the arrow to further show to everyone that he was merciful and kind towards Elsa, but he intentionally deflected it toward the chandelier to kill Elsa...which didn't work.

So he brings Elsa back to Arendelle, again showing both her and the kingdom that he is a benevolent man, and....well, we know what happens after that.

Then why were the trading outposts out of food and winter supplies and the ice merchant going broke?
Because they were set up for Summer and not Winter. They probably ate or stocked up on all/most of the food and water they had. Thus if they had any, it wouldn't be up for sell.

wolfgirl90

Then why were the trading outposts out of food and winter supplies and the ice merchant going broke?

Well, Oaken was out of winter supplies because it was the middle of summer when all of this happened. I'm guessing he might have been out of food from having people cross into Arendelle for the coronation.

As for Kristoff being broke, that has always been an issue for me; hell, the passage of time in general, and how people react to it, is the one thing I don't like about this movie (and I LOVE this movie).

Considering that it was summer, Kristoff should be making bank. He was even seen in Arendelle trading with Sven. How he managed to have not enough money to pay for his supplies is beyond me. He could be having issues selling his ice, but the passage of time in Frozen is not at all clear. The time between Elsa running away and Anna meeting Kristoff is less than a day; this is not enough time for Kristoff to run out of money. When the story goes back to Arendelle, it has literally been two days since Elsa ran away, but the entire kingdom is freezing and running out of food, which makes no sense because this is fictional Norway; people should have clothes for the winter (they would probably feel better if they were inside; a lot of guests are still wandering around outside). And how is an entire kingdom running out of food after a couple of days? The Duke of Weslton, among others, is worried about Elsa's "eternal winter" when it has only been two days.

I would accept that it would take some time to get to the North Mountain if Kristoff didn't ride down the mountain, then back up, then BACK DOWN AGAIN, in a just a few hours (and I am being generous here)

Albear

Oh Arendelle, a magical Scandinavian kingdom in the middle of nowhere.. like most Disney kingdoms.

I actually paused the movie several times during Elsa's coronation to see if Eugene and Rapunzel were sitting among the spectators.
I'm gonna assume something came up and they had to return to Corona supposedly. Or Rapunzel became bored and went exploring, with Eugene following suit.

I know I would fall asleep like homeboy sitting next to Hans during the event.

04-25-2014, 10:43 PM
Then why were the trading outposts out of food and winter supplies and the ice merchant going broke?

I should probably qualify statements by saying that I viewed the movie behind a small sea of somewhat noisey elementary kids, and was periodically cooking hot dogs, getting a kid out from in front of the screen, or getting my wife a soda and some m&ms. There were some distractions during that scene.

But my impression was the same as the others here in that he didn't have winter supplies because it was supposed to be summer. I'm not so sure he was exactly out of food ( wasn't he offering free lutefisk? ) Although around here when a big storm comes in people are siezed with a desire to empty stores of bread, milk, eggs, and bottled water.

It's ridiculous. Couldn't you buy your bottled water ahead of time? The stuff keeps! If you're really worried just fill up your bathtub or something.

Anyway, back on topic, considering there appeared to be an imminent crop failure hoarding would be reasonable.

I'd blame Kristoff's shortage of funds on a lack of business acumen or perhaps that he was expecting to sell all that ice to the store keep in exchange for supplies and money. But I'm not sure he was broke. Rather he got pissy about the price gouging and the store owner threw him out.

(And of course if Kristoff was full of cash it would have been harder for the writers to figure out why he'd go play with some wolves for some snotty girl he just met.)

But more than that if it took them months to get out it would have taken months to get back, and I didn't get the impression the whole heart freezing thing offered that sort of time. Rather my impression was that everything was happening within hours of the castle.

wolfgirl90

That's kinda how I feel. Some people say that an unspecified amount of time happens between Elsa leaving and her getting captured, but I think the main events in the movie take place in the Disney standard of three days.

Kristoff takes Anna back to Arendelle, then goes up the mountain, then comes back down. This has to happen in a short amount of time because Anna appears to be dying rapidly. Days aren't going by during this time; it is only a few hours or so.
